Soccer is a competitive sport with a long history and its origins can be traced back to the mid 19th century. Soccer history can be traced back to the different forms of football that was popular in England in the late 1840’s. Even then, historians believe that soccer history can be dated back to 1004 B.C when players in Japan used to kick around a ball around a small field. Interestingly Chinese historical texts have revealed that a game similar to modern day soccer was being played out between teams from Japan and China around 50 B.C.

Soccer history also reveals that Romans played a version of modern soccer and it was even introduced in the early Roman Olympics. But in the early Roman Olympics, soccer teams had 27 players on each side battling for the trophy. According to soccer history, modern day soccer came into life when the first set of rules for the game was drawn up in 1848 at the Cambridge University. Come to think of it – England’s King Edward (1307-1327) had actually passed a law threatening imprisonment to anyone who played the game. The truth is that Cambridge University is not the first to come out with soccer rules, it was Eton College and they introduced certain rules for playing the game in 1815.

The Cambridge Rules of 1848 has found a place in soccer history. These rules have played an influential role in development of modern soccer and were written at Trinity College, Cambridge. The rules for soccer were created by representatives from some of the finest colleges in England including Harrow, Eton, Winchester, Rugby, and Shrewsbury. Although the rules were not universally adopted, several small local clubs started playing the game based on the rules around the 1850s. Of course, some local clubs even went to the extent of creating their distinct codes of rules for the game and one such club is the Sheffield Football Club. Sheffield Football Club was actually formed by ex-public school students in 1857 and this eventually led to the formation of Sheffield FA in 1867.

The Football Association (FA) was formed in 1863 and the FA Cup was first organized in 1871. The FA Cup recreated soccer history and went on to attract huge number of Britons to the sport. In 1885, the FA (Football Association) took an important step by recognizing and accepting the legitimacy of professional soccer players. Three years later in 1888, 12 clubs joined in to form the football league in England and this was one of the biggest historical moments. In fact, this is where modern soccer history was established.

The first international soccer match commenced on 30 November, 1872 in Glasgow, Scotland. The two teams included an English all-star team and a Scottish all-star team and the match ended in a scoreless draw. The soccer world cup of FIFA world cup as we know now was first held in 1930 in Uruguay and they became the world champions as well!

This was one of the most significant upsets in the history of the Super Bowl. The New York Giants, who had a 14-6 winning record, were playing against the New England Patriots who had an 18-1 winning record. Everything pointed to the Patriots winning the game. Well, it’s not over till it’s over! In a stunning upset, the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots by a score of 17-14. This prevented the Patriots from becoming the first team that was undefeated since the 1972 Miami Dolphins.

The Giants made a bit of history becoming the first wild card team from the NFC to ever win a Super Bowl. This was New York’s first title since January 1991 when they played in Super Bowl XXV. Bill Belichick coached the New England Patriots and the tagline for this Super Bowl was “Who Wants It More?” It was quite evident that the New York Giants were hungry for victory.

The Super Bowl Game was held on February 3, 2008, in Glendale, Arizona at the University of Phoenix Football Stadium. It turned out to be a rematch of the final game in the regular season. The New England Patriots came into Super Bowl XLII as 12-point favorites.

The telecast of Super Bowl XLII was the one that was the most watched of all time. There was an average of 97.5 million viewers in the U.S. alone and 148.3 total viewers that watched at least part of the game. The broadcast of the XLII Super Bowl achieved the highest Nielsen ratings for any game watched since Super Bowl XXXIV. This Super Bowl game was also the second most watched television program of all time here in the U.S.

This was indeed one of the greatest upsets in all of Super Bowl history. The New York Giants derailed the perfect season of the New England Patriots and they also turned around a mediocre regular season.

The New York Giants were 12 point underdogs as they headed into Super Bowl XLII. The New York Giants overcame the highest point spread to put the icing on the cake since the New England Patriots the St. Louis Rams as 14 point underdogs at Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001.

Now we have to set our sights on Super Bowl XLIII which will be held on February 1, 2009, down at Tampa Bay, Florida. You have to check out the latest Super Bowl odds for Super Bowl XLIII in the BetUS.com Sportsbook futures section.

For the NFC and the AFC, the long and grueling road ends here, in Tampa, FL.

Scotland has throughout its history been playing Soccer. Historically Scottish soccer players weren’t limited to 11 players per team, whole villages of Scottish soccer devotees used to challenge other villages to a game.

The rules of soccer at that point weren’t very uniform and there was little if any provisions against violence, because of this attempts were made to outlaw the game, with King James I even saying in Parliament, “That na man play at the Fute-ball” (No man shall play football/soccer). Despite the attempts of clerics, sheriffs, mayors and even a King the game was kept alive by Scottish soccer players.

As times changed Soccer became a widely accepted sport again, firstly being played at school and universities. At these institutions the rules for soccer were formalized to something closely resembling today’s game. The game’s popularity then spread beyond the school campuses, and local soccer clubs were formed, soccer became a popular spectator sport with “blue-collar workers”.

With the wide acceptance and popularity of soccer, the World’s first international game was set up, between Scotland and England. The game took place on 30 November 1872. The Scottish side was one of Scotland’s oldest and most established Soccer club, Queens Park. Two thousand people came to the game and saw the last and possibly biggest revolution in the playing of the game. The Scottish team introduced a whole new aspect to the game that day, a team based approach utilizing, passing. Up till then the way the game was played was to “muscle” the ball up the field in Rugby like fashion, after that game the English began adopting a playing style to match the Scottish soccer team, and Soccer in its current form was born.

The Scottish soccer team did not exist that day in the form that we now understand; soccer was played by Universities or Clubs, with no central organization to elect a national team. There was no Scottish team picked from the best players around, but a club to represent the whole country. To cope and control the rising popularity of the game Scotland formed a Football Association three month after the first match between England and Scotland. Wales then followed and formed a FA in 1875, and then Ireland in 1880. England on the other hand had formed their Football Association in 1863. With the formation of a Football Association, Scotland was able to establish leagues, tournament and even a national team.

With forty two different professional teams over two different leagues, it is understandable that Scotland has some of the most dedicated Soccer fans in the world; this also applies to the female fans. Scotland has also always had a strong legion of female soccer lovers and players. Seeming to always be pioneers in the game Scotland and England were also the first two countries to have an international woman’s match. Fifty three thousand people came to watch this event, in which unfortunately the Scottish soccer team lost 22-0.

Soccer is in the hearts of the Scotts, it always was, and always will be part of their heritage. Visit us at Scottish Heirloom Jewelry, to see how we can help you celebrate your heritage and love of soccer.

Scottish Soccer – league winners

1892 Dunbarton

1893 Celtic Glasgow

1894 Celtic Glasgow

1895 Heart of Midlothian

1896 Celtic Glasgow

1897 Heart of Midlothian

1898 Celtic Glasgow

1899 Glasgow Rangers

1900 Glasgow Rangers

1901 Glasgow Rangers

1902 Glasgow Rangers

1903 Hibernian

1904 Third Lanark

1905 Celtic Glasgow

1906 Celtic Glasgow

1907 Celtic Glasgow

1908 Celtic Glasgow

1909 Celtic Glasgow

1910 Celtic Glasgow

1911 Glasgow Rangers

1912 Glasgow Rangers

1913 Celtic Glasgow

1914 Celtic Glasgow

1915 Celtic Glasgow

1916 Celtic Glasgow

1917 Celtic Glasgow

1918 Glasgow Rangers

1919 Celtic Glasgow

1920 Glasgow Rangers

1921 Glasgow Rangers

1922 Celtic Glasgow

1923 Glasgow Rangers

1924 Glasgow Rangers

1925 Glasgow Rangers

1926 Celtic Glasgow

1927 Glasgow Rangers

1928 Glasgow Rangers

1929 Glasgow Rangers

1930 Glasgow Rangers

1931 Glasgow Rangers

1932 Motherwell

1933 Glasgow Rangers

1934 Glasgow Rangers

1935 Glasgow Rangers

1936 Celtic Glasgow

1937 Glasgow Rangers

1938 Celtic Glasgow

1939 Glasgow Rangers

1947 Glasgow Rangers

1948 Hibernian

1949 Glasgow Rangers

1950 Glasgow Rangers

1951 Hibernian Glasgow

1952 Hibernian Glasgow

1953 Glasgow Rangers

1954 Celtic Glasgow

1955 Aberdeen Celtic

1956 Glasgow Rangers

1957 Glasgow Rangers

1958 Heart Of Midlothian

1959 Glasgow Rangers

1960 Heart Of Midlothian

1961 Glasgow Rangers

1962 Dundee

1963 Glasgow Rangers

1964 Glasgow Rangers

1965 Kilmarnock

1966 Celtic Glasgow

1967 Celtic Glasgow

1968 Celtic Glasgow

1969 Celtic Glasgowv

1970 Celtic Glasgow

1971 Celtic Glasgow

1972 Celtic Glasgow

1973 Celtic Glasgow

1974 Celtic Glasgow

1975 Glasgow Rangers

1976 Glasgow Rangers

1977 Celtic Glasgow

1978 Glasgow Rangers

1979 Celtic Glasgow

1980 Aberdeen Celtic

1981 Celtic Glasgow

1982 Celtic Glasgow

1983 Dundee United

1984 Aberdeen Celtic

1985 Aberdeen

1986 Celtic Glasgow

1987 Glasgow Rangers

1988 Celtic Glasgow

1989 Glasgow Rangers

1990 Glasgow Rangers

1991 Glasgow Rangers

1992 Glasgow Rangers

1993 Glasgow Rangers

1994 Glasgow Rangers

1995 Glasgow Rangers

1996 Glasgow Rangers

1997 Glasgow Rangers

1998 Celtic Glasgow

1999 Glasgow Rangers

2000 Glasgow Rangers

2001 Celtic Glasgow

2002 Celtic Glasgow

2003 Glasgow Rangers

Unlike the jab which is more of an arm punch, the right cross is powered by a twisting motion of the torso and pivoting of the right foot.
As the punch accelerates, twist your hips and pivot on your right foot so your right heel swings outwards.

The right cross is a power punch but because of the weight transfer it can also leave you exposed without a boxer’s stance for a split second. This is why it is important to return back to guard as quick as possible.

You should never lead with your right cross – instead, probe your opponents defences with your jabs, create an opening then throw your right cross with power.

Practice the right cross on the heavy bag, using a light left jab to measure the distance, after the heavy bag, move onto a more mobile target like the focus pads, concentrate on maintaining your balance as the punch makes contact.

Keep practising and remember to visit UK Boxing Store for quality boxing equipment.

Boxing has always been seen as a noble art, anyone who has ever been involved with the sport will tell you that the raining is hard but only half the story. To be a boxer you need to be totally dedicated and let boxing consume your life and you need to have nerves of steel when you step in the ring. That’s wonderful if you’ve got the fitness levels to get you to a stage where you can get on the road to being a boxer. But what about those mere mortals such as you and I who are looking for a release after a long day at work or some where to channel the frustrations of life that we encounter in our day to day lives. How can we use boxing as a way of keeping fit?

Boxing at any level is hard. Don’t be fooled into thinking that just because you are a normal guy who doesn’t want to fight at the Olympics and therefore won’t go to the extremes of the professional guys that it will be easy, it isn’t. Boxing is energy sapping, you are throwing punches and using footwork to move around a bag or opponent put these together for a two minute round and you’ll soon start to feel it.

All amateur and beginners boxing is based around a two minute round with a one minute break between rounds. This minute isn’t always used as a break. A really good way of boosting your fitness levels is to maybe to one set of twenty squat-thrusts, press-ups, burpees, crunches or star jumps. You can take a break between the rounds, or even ever other round but doing a set of these exercises will make a big difference, and you will know you’ve trained hard at the end of the session.

Within a boxing gym [http://www.nike-trainers.com/The_News/Latest_News/Boxing_Fit/] there should be maybe 10-12 different bags to work on; these will all help to develop different skills. All punch bags are not made equal.

A light bag should be used to develop fast hitting skills. The trick is to get the bag to not swing as wildly as you imagine that it would. The idea is to move around the bag as it swings, hitting it as it is on its way back to you, not going away from you. If you catch it hard and correctly as it’s on the way back to you it should be possible to stop it. You can also use the light bag to develop you movement technique, push or swing the bag away from you and from your boxing stance use your foot work to step to the side or bob and weave to avoid the bag, when the bag slows down finish the round with a flurry of fast punches for a real burn of a round.

The heavy bag is used purely for developing your punching power. Again, as the bag swings towards you try connecting with solid left and right straight shots, ensuring that your arm is straight and that you make contact with the knuckle part of the glove or you risk twisting your wrist which can be very painful.

The floor to ceiling ball is where you can be made to look very silly! This is a punch ball suspended floor to ceiling by two pieces of heavy duty elastic, as you punch the ball it whips back at you. The trick here is to anticipate where it is going to go and correctly judge a punch to it or use quick feet to get out of the way. This isn’t the most tiring round you will do but it is one of the most mentally draining. Be ready for the ball to fly back at you as it does come back at some speed and to the amusement of anyone else training it can take you off your feet. Prolonged use will improve your reactions though and it won’t be too long before you’ve got the better of it.

The teardrop bag is suspended from the ceiling and is usually quite a heavy bag, sometimes filled with maize. The teardrop bag is used to hone boxing skills such as the hook or upper-cut although you can land straight shots to it.

The body bag isn’t as brutal as it sounds, it’s basically a bag that is best described as having a figure of 8 curve to it to help you practise body sots and body hooks as well as head hooks and straight shots. This is great bag for practising your close up boxing work.

The final piece of equipment you’ll find in a gym is the speedball. This is the piece of equipment that all new-comers to boxing want to master as they’ve seen it on all the boxing movies.

The speedball develops hand to foot co-ordination and although the punches that are thrown whilst on the speedball aren’t realistically used in boxing the speedball still develops hand speed and stamina. I’ve always found the best way to perfect using a speedball is to land rolling punches slowly and build to a crescendo and get the timing of the ball by listening to the rhythm of the bag.

Don’t feel intimidated by boxing; it is a great discipline to learn. It isn’t easy to master but you can get yourself to a reasonably competent level by sticking with the training. Boxing will give you a great all over body workout, help you lose weight and keep you in good shape.

In today’s media we are constantly being reminded of a health time bomb that is about to explode as children today are not active enough.

There are so many competing distractions for our children’s attention, video games, endless channels to watch, these can all lead to sedentary lifestyle if they are not kept in check.

Soccer is the beautiful game, played by millions of young girls and boys (aged 6 to 18) across many continents, whether it’s on the beaches of Rio, the back alleys of a major city nearby or the local park, you will find someone kicking a football around.

In today’s society there has been a shift to more organised soccer practice for our youth players. Gone are the days of jumpers for goal posts, as streets are littered with cars and grass verges now have houses built on them.

Having a more structured approach is both a good and a bad thing; on one hand young players get structured development and education through willing volunteers who show them how everything from how to warm up correctly, develop their technical ability with the ball right through to skill development and organised small sided games to wrap everything up together to provide a total learning experience.

Today time is limited and therefore there may be only an hour or two devoted to structured soccer practice during the week, what happens when practice is over?

Getting your child to participate in an organised soccer school or club can bring tremendous benefits to you and your child.

Soccer can help increase your child’s self esteem, which feeds their self talk which ultimately drives their performance. But soccer isn’t the only winner, quite often it can be seen that academic performance can increases to!

Studies have shown that getting young children involved in soccer at an early stage promotes a real healthy attitude towards the game and this attitude continues with them into adult life.

The number one reason why children play soccer is to have fun; if soccer is fun and enjoyable then players will want to continue playing. This benefits their overall fitness and reduces their health risks considerably.

Soccer is made fun by coaches worldwide who willingly give up their time voluntarily to organise youth soccer practice and coach teams.

Gone are the days when soccer, for the really young players, was an 11 a side game with offside rules and no touches of the ball for massive periods of the game.

Youth soccer from the age of 6 to 11 is typically about having fun, playing small sided matches such as 4 v 4 with no goal keepers, promoting lots of touches of the ball and player interaction on the pitch.

Through playing soccer and encouraging children to take regular exercise many of the risk factors that are associated with heart disease such as obesity and diabetes can be reduced significantly. It is stated that childhood obesity has increased by more than 50% since 1976, which is a really scary fact.

Getting your child involved in soccer doesn’t just improve their health. We’ve mentioned already the improvements at school.

Social benefits, such as mixing with others, having to work as a team, contributing through individual effort to a collective goal, experiencing the highs and lows, picking each other up, competition, striving to be the best, aiming to win and supporting and helping others are all by products of playing soccer.

Many of the life skills that the players learn through soccer are beneficial in later life, how to form and build relationships, developing a sense of co-operation, how to lead people, how to handle adversity, what commitment means and punctuality, are all key qualities that will benefit the players in adult life.

If your child is already playing soccer, great. But what can you do if you want to get your child involved in a local soccer team? Here are seven must ask questions that you and your child should consider when attempting to find a suitable club…

1) What level of commitment is required in terms of practice sessions and games at the weekend?

2) When are the training sessions? When are games played, what’s the format and how much time will you need to devote?

3) How far are you willing to travel to training and to matches? Some clubs will operate travel teams where distances can be considerable, including overnight stops.

4) What are the costs involved? Some clubs adopt a pay when you play, others a more structured approach. The most expensive clubs are not always the best, ask yourself is what your paying in the equivalent to what your child is getting out?

5) What do you and your child want out of playing soccer? This needs to be aligned with the prospective clubs philosophy, is it about having fun or winning?

6) How best will your child learn, develop and stay interested? Are they happy just to be involved or would they thrive in a more competitive environment?

7)What is the clubs constitution and philosophy to soccer, how long have they been in existence, the experience of the coaches, location, facilities etc.

Once you have considered the above questions what are your next steps to finding a suitable club or soccer organisation for your child?

You can…

i) Get in touch with your local Soccer Association by searching the web or looking in yellow pages. They should be able to provide you with a list of clubs and organisations in your local area.

ii) Ask other parents/guardians about local junior and youth soccer teams. You’ll be surprised at how many adults or their children are involved.

iii) Encourage you children to ask their school mates where they play their soccer. Knowing some of the team can be a real advantage as players integrate themselves into a team.

iv) Ask your child’s form tutor or headmaster if they know of any clubs or organisations. Many clubs have formed good relationships with the schools over the years.

v) Read the local papers or local news websites you’ll be amazed at how much coverage youth and junior soccer gets.

These five practical steps should enable you to find a club that meets yours and your child’s soccer aspirations. However, if there still isn’t a club near you that can satisfy a need why not look to set up your own team!

For those who are in school or college, playing football is a passion and for their family members to be able to buy college football ticket is something they enjoy. Most students play some sport or the other during their school days and in America, football is an obvious choice. This sport seems to have originated in England then moved to USA when some students from Princeton first began playing it in the college field. In order to buy college football ticket, the person must make sure to touch base with the college or the website that sells them. One can both go for regular season or playoffs and buy college football ticket for the relevant matches. And all the teams that play in these games are as professionally qualified as Super bowl players. This is what makes these games so popular and in demand. The colleges today encourage students to play this sport as it is worldwide recognized and they could get scholarships while applying for colleges.

The college football is played in smaller stadiums, which have benches for seats for those, present to witness the game. The team has a coach and goes through everything that a state level team follows. Only difference being these players are all students and much younger than league players. Also the college athletes are not paid a salary unlike the professional players, but they are entitled to any kind of financial assistance from their university. Most of the public schools today are part of the college football and seem to outdo the private teams. Anyone interested in sports will vouch for the fact that this game has most fun and is more nerve wrecking till the end.

Since the college football matches begin 2-3 weeks after the NFL matches, buying college football ticket is not much of a problem. In these games, there are no playoffs but only super bowls to determine who the winner is. And the very first Bowl game that was played was way back in 1902 between Stanford and Michigan and called the Rose Bowl. After this, there have been many bowl leagues played by the college teams in America slowly gaining popularity for this event. In all there are about four bowl games played at the end of which is the Grand finale, the All stars championships which takes place in January every year.

A game so famous that it is telecast by almost all sports channels draws crowds from various parts of the country. All of whom have been lucky to buy college football tickets and be present to root for their teams. The sport is indeed filled with excitement and anxious fans waiting to see who the winner will be. In this game, one cannot predict who the winner will be as every game is different and so for a person who wants to buy college football tickets for a particular season, he will get to be a part of the entire action in store.

College sports have always been a popular way for people to pass time and enjoy themselves. College sports are also important to the people who are more than serious about their sports. College players are good to get familiar with as they may one day be in the Major Leagues. College football rankings of this year are varying only a little from poll to poll. Most of these poll’s top three are basically the same teams only slightly out of order from poll to poll. The statistics and information in this report are from the two top polls: The Associated Press Poll and the USA Today Poll. They show many similarities and were both taken recently to this writing.

At the top of both of these polls is the Louisiana State Tigers. This team has drawn in over a thousand votes on both polls. Last year they were prospected as the second best team in the college football world, but they have worked they way up to first this year. The second pick on Associated Press is Georgia with over fifteen hundred votes and USC is the third pick with fifteen hundred votes exactly. However, the USA today poll shows USC second with one thousand three hundred and eighty votes and Georgia in third place with one thousand three hundred and seventy votes. So, the top three picks on these polls are the same with just a little variation. It is quite close between Georgia and the University of Southern California, so it will be interesting to find out who really is the better team this year.

Ohio State hit both of these polls in the top five as well. For the Associated Press poll, Ohio State comes in at number five on the rankings with a little over thirteen hundred votes. Ohio State stands at number four in the USA Today ranking with nearly thirteen hundred votes. Missouri is also located in each of these poll’s top five. Missouri is number four on the Associated Press poll and number five on the USA Today poll. So, the top five are also in agreement between both of these polls with only small variations and very similar amounts of votes. This season of college football should be an exciting one. It will be interesting to watch this season unfold and see who really comes out on top and to see who beats who. With the poll rankings on these sites being so very close together in their top five, it seems like this will be an edge of your seat year in the world of college football. And many of this year’s top college football players are seniors, and may be making way for a great football future in the National Football League.

Another popular poll has about the same top five as the Associated Press and USA Today polls with some small variations. This is the Bowl Championship Series Rankings and is also well known. Number one on their top five is the Ohio State Buckeyes. Number two is the Louisiana State Tigers. Number three is the Virginia Tech Hokies. Number four on the poll is the Oklahoma Sooners and number five is the Georgia Bulldogs. The BCS college football rankings are very important because they determine who goes to the important bowl games played near the end of each season, and which are watched by millions.

You will notice that as wagering on a race progresses closer to post time, the odds will change. Why is that you ask? The Cash that is wagered in a horse race is counted up and put into Pools. What is a Pool? A Pool is where the total amount of money that is wagered on a specific type of bet is held to be redistributed to patrons that have correctly selected the outcome of the specific wager they have placed. Out of these pools certain percentages are subtracted. The Government receives a percentage (taxes) for allowing the race in a certain jurisdiction. The Racetracks receive a percentage for promotions, maintaining the racetrack, and paying employees. The horsemen receive a percentage that makes the Race Tracks able to offer purse money to the owners and trainers for racing horses. If there was no money, there would be no racing. After the percentage is removed, the remaining money is paid out. This is where gamblers get their payouts for winning tickets.

The odds are usually in the form of x/y (e.g. 5/1, 9/5). Dividing x by y gives a ratio to 1. The smallest ratio or the largest amount of money on a number represents the favorite.

Winning odds of 2/1 will pay $6.00 for a $2 bet, while 5/1 will pay $12.00 for a $2 bet. Payout is calculated by (odds ratio to 1) x bet amount + bet amount.

Example: For odds of 5/1, the approximate payout for a $2 bet is 5 x $2 = $10 + $2 = $12.

Some tracks allow different minimum amounts on each type of bet; generally, $1 bets tends to be the minimum on all bets. The offshore sportsbook odds are calculated based on the sales for the bet minus a government, and handling tax. These deductions vary and are usually controlled by a regulatory body. Deductions may vary in the same track if there are simulcast races. In addition some tracks tax payouts in excess of a specified limit; generally, this limit is 600/1.

Boxing has been around for a very long time. During the great history of boxing were some amazing matches. These matches showed the true heart and determination of the human soul. They also show the power and skill that some boxers possess. It seems that these traits can not be found in boxers these days. I have watched quite a few boxing matches lately, and I have yet to see a match that is even close to measuring up to some of these old boxing matches. I am only going to look at one of my favorite boxing memories that I had when I was a kid, but I could discuss many more. The boxing match that I can remember very vividly in my mind was the Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns fight.

The fight between Leonard and Hearns was one for the ages. Hearns was a big puncher and caused quite a bit of damage to Leonard’s eye. However Sugar Ray would not quit fighting, and hurt Hearns during the middle rounds. By the thirteenth round Sugar Ray was way behind on all of the judge’s score cards, however the match was about to change. Sugar Ray landed a barrage of punches to Hearns’ head, and he staggered backwards. Sugar Ray kept charging and knocked Hearns through the ropes onto a table outside of the ring. You would think that this would have ended the fight, but Hearns had enough heart to keep fighting. Sugar Ray would eventually finish the fight in the next round when the referee stopped the fight by technical knockout.

This match would have lasting effects on both boxers’ careers. Hearns would leave this match and go on to win many world championships, but this fight would always linger in people’s minds as a blemish on his career. Leonard suffered a detached retina in this fight, which caused him to retire for the first time. Leonard would later come back two different times and fight for another ten years. Leonard also went on to ink many endorsement deals after this fight, and Hearns always believed the reason he did not get many deals of his own was because he lost this fight.

Most players who take golf lessons from me don’t have an official golf handicap. That comes as no surprise to me since most recreational golfers don’t have a golf handicap anyways. Of the more than 26 million golfers in the United States (adults who played at least one round of golf during a season), less than 20 percent have a handicap, according to statistics provided by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in 2003. And that’s just the U.S.

Reasons exist for not having a golf handicap vary. Some players feel they’re not good enough to have one. Others feel that having one is pretentious. Then there are those who feel that going through the effort to get one is just too much trouble or are intimidated by the paperwork involved. Despite how these golfers feel, the benefits of having a handicap far outweigh the reasons not to have one.

A Golf Handicap Defined

A golf handicap measures a player’s potential ability to achieve a certain score compared to an expert-amateur’s ability to do the same. Defined by a number, a handicap allows golfer’s to compete on an equal basis, which is great when playing in tournaments or other golf venues.

The key, of course, is that a handicap creates a level playing field, so players of unequal ability can play at the same course on equal footing, making the match fairer and the game more enjoyable. Nothing in golf, however, says you must have one to play. Golfers who don’t have one violate no rule of the game.

But one of the biggest reasons for having a handicap and the reason I encourage players who attend my golf instruction sessions to get a handicap is that it can help improve your game. By posting your scores whether by using an online tool or submitting them to someone in person you’ll have a highly effective tool for tracking your improvement and spotting playing trends. You’ll also have a goal to shoot for as you work on your game.

For example, let’s say you decide to improve your short game. If over the course of a year or so and after dozens of practice sessions, you see your handicap dropping you know you are on the right practice track. If you don’t see it dropping, either you’re not putting in enough practice, practicing correctly, or working on the right thing. You can then make changes to and see how that works.

How To Get A Handicap

Most players who join a private country club are automatically put on the handicap roster. But players who are not members of a country club must initiate the effort. The most likely?but not the only way of doing that is through a sanctioned golf organization, like the USGA.

The USGA, for instance, calculates a handicap using a fairly complex formula that’s applied to the 10 best of a golfer’s last 20 rounds. Getting a USGA handicap requires membership in a club. But it can be a friendly golf group at your local public course or your own ad-hoc assemblage of 10 golfers, which would form a “club without real estate.”

There are other ways of obtaining a golf handicap, depending on where you live. Golf Record (http://www.golfrecord.com), a Web site designed to keep track of your scores, provides the tools for you to generate a golf handicap, as does Elite Golf Solutions (http://www.elitegolfsolutions.co.uk), another golf only Web site. Both require registration to join. Meanwhile About.com’s Golf section does a fine job of explaining how the handicap is calculated http://golf.about.com/cs/handicapping/a/howcalculated.htm.

What’s important is not how you calculate a golf handicap or how you obtain it, but that you get one. It not only helps you improve your game by providing a goal to shoot for, but also provides direction for planning practice programs and basis for boosting your confidence every time you lower it. In addition, a golf handicap will provide some credibility to your playing ability and make it easer to compete in competitions and tournaments.

Copyright (c) 2008 Jack Moorehouse

To fight successfully a boxer must employ the right boxing techniques for himself. You must follow your plan. For a start you should study your opponent and look for his weak points. And attack them relentlessly so you can get the better of him.

Of course you need to develop a full armoury of punches for yourself before you first get in the ring. The more punches you can throw effectively the harder it is for any opponent to defeat you.

This means time spent practicing. Learning and mastering the technical aspects behind an array of blows and punches. So once you figure your opponent out keep hitting him with punches that give him the most discomfort.

Obviously you must think on your feet. If your fight isn’t going to plan than you must re-think your strategy. And quickly.

Forget your opponent’s strong points – you’ll soon discover them.

One thing, never box a boxer the way he wants to box. If he is a good out fighter make him in fight. And vice versa. In other words make him fight in a way that is uncomfortable to him.

Your training and boxing skills will play a big part in your success. But your boxing brain is just as important. Figure out your opponent and take advantage of his weaknesses.

You must be confident. And display this to your opponent. Never allow any sign of weakness or pain to appear on your face. Even if you are totally exhausted. Never give him any signs of encouragement. If your opponent is in trouble and sees you are fresh he’ll become that much more dispirited.

And your victory is assured.

Joe ‘Bomber’ Barnes

Mexico hasn’t been very successful at national team level, since they only managed to reach the World Cup quarter finals on two occasions (both in World Cups held in Mexico). However, soccer teams in Mexico gradually became more powerful and today they are considered a force to be reckoned with in American soil as well as on an international club level.

I was planning to make a top 5 of the Mexico soccer teams, but I decided against ranking them, because that might stir some trouble with the fans, such as a fan asking why is team over team in the ranking, since won more championships and so forth. Here are what I believe to be the most important soccer teams in Mexico, ranked by alphabet only .

Mexico Soccer Teams – Club America

Club America was founded in 1916, being one of the oldest professional clubs in Mexico, although the first league title was not to be won until 1956-1966. They’re currently the owners of 10 national championships, being only second to Chivas de Guadalajara, who have won 11 titles in their history. The two are the most successful soccer teams in Mexico from a silverware point of view and Chivas is the historical nemesis of America, so a match between the two is a derby that the entire country awaits.

Club America gets credit for discovering or highlighting players such as Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Enrique Borja, Carlos Hermosillo, Pavel Pardo, Zizinho, Claudio Lopez, Ivan Zamorano or Ilie Dumitrescu.

Mexico Soccer Teams – Chivas de Guadalajara

The club’s official name is Club Deportivo Guadalajara, but every soccer fan in Mexico knows them as Chivas (the goats). Their tally of 11 league titles makes Chivas the most successful of all soccer teams in Mexico, trailing arch-nemesis America by one title. They’re also very loved for their Mexican-only policy, in that they never use foreigners and focus only on local Mexican players.

Their popularity reaches far beyond the borders of Mexico and into the United States, where a team called Chivas USA was formed. The Mexican Chivas have credit for launching players such as Salvador Reyes, Omar Bravo, Claudio Suarez, Juan Palencia, Gonzalo Pineda, Luis Garcia or Carlos Hermosillo.

Mexico Soccer Teams – Pachuca

Despite being the oldest club in Mexican soccer history, being founded in 1901, Pachuca has only become truly competitive in the past few decades. Winning the Primera Division 5 times in the last 8 years and the CONCACAF Champions Cup twice, in 2002 and 2007, Pachuca rose to become a force amongst the soccer teams in Mexico.

The most notable players that got to play for Pachuca include: Jared Borgetti, Jaime Correa, Fausto Pinto, Damian Alvarez, Mosquera, Ivan Hurtado and Juan Arango.

Mexico Soccer Teams – Pumas

Because of the team’s close relation to UNAM, the largest university in Mexico, the club became known as UNAM Pumas, although their official name is Club Universidad Nacional A.C. Although the Pumas don’t have the same history as some of the other top soccer clubs in Mexico, having been founded in 1954, they definitely made their years of existence count, winning 5 league champs, 3 CONCACAF Cups, 1 Interamerican Cup as well as several smaller silverware.

Amongst the players that wore the Pumas logo on their shirt in the club’s fifty-year existence, the most important are: Enrique Borja, Hugo Sanchez, Jorge Campos, Alberto Aspe, Luis Garcia, Esteban Solari, Emerson, Ailton da Silva or Dario Veron.

Mexico Soccer Teams – Toluca

Toluca was a force amongst the soccer teams in Mexico ever since the 1960s, having won 8 championship titles since then. Ever since Toluca’s founding in 1917, they have been known as an offensive team who throws their dice on the attackers, somewhat neglecting the defensive part of the game. This philosophy was a double edged sword, as Toluca varied between relegation places and titles in the 60s and 70s.

Obviously, today this attacking mentality is a lot less noticeable and Toluca’s game has become more tactical. Some of the notable players that wore Toluca’s red and white shirt include: Enrique Alfaro, Zinha, Pedro Romero, Enzo Trossero, Dario Rodriguez, Jose Cardozo, Fabian Estay, Darko Vukic and Juan Antonio Pizzi.

Boxing is one of the most widely known sports today. Boxing caters to various genres of people. Boxing has major media presence as it draws a tremendous audience. HBO, a cable TV network has taken full advantage of boxing popularity by dedicating much of their programming to the sport. It has shown some of boxing’s greatest fights and stories and events related to boxing for over 30 years. Boxing matches have featured some of the greatest fighters in the world including Muhammad Ali who won the world heavyweight championship three times and beat Joe Frazier, in the infamous “Thrilla in Manila” match. HBO also covered the biggest upset in history when Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson. The first match ever shown on HBO was fought in Kingston, Jamaica, when George Foreman defeated Joe Frazier in two rounds and went on to the World Heavyweight title.

HBO has also broadcast spin-off series relating to boxing including “Boxing After Dark,” and “KO Nation.” They even produced a video game “HBO Boxing” for Sony PlayStation.

Swinging a club powerfully and efficiently is based on what our bodies can do. As we get older, what we can do changes. Without maintaining strength and flexibility, we lose our ability to swing a club powerfully and efficiently. If you want to maintain a low golf handicap, you must maintain your strength and flexibility.

Exercising helps. We’re not talking about lifting weights or running 5K races. While resistance training and running are good, you don’t have to become a body builder to maintain your golf handicap. Stretching is just as effective. It’s just a matter of pinpointing weak areas and using the right exercises to improve those areas.

Some strength and conditioning experts believe that the body’s a series of mobility and stability joints. When a mobility joint is weak and malfunctioning, a stability joint compensates. This causes instability, dysfunction, and pain. If your hip-a mobility joint-malfunctions, then your lower back-a stability joint-compensates and you experience lower back pain.

Do two sets of each exercise (8 repetitions). Repeat in the opposite direction if the movement is to one side.

Over the Top

Coming over the top with your swing is one of a weekend golfer’s most common mistakes. Weekend players attend thousands of golf lessons every year trying to cure this problem, created by the inability to turn your upper and lower bodies independently of each other, to no avail. The swing flaw causes you to come straight down with your swing, resulting in slices and pulls.

Supported Stork Turns:

Hold onto a club and stand on one leg, using the club as a support. Keep your shoulders square and rotate your pelvis back and forth.

Chicken Wing

If your shoulders are inflexible, you’ll have difficulty rotating. Shoulder problems can cause the front arm to jut away from the body at the elbow during the through swing and look like a chicken wing. This flaw can cause elbow tendonitis and sliced shots.

Windshield Wipers:

This exercise uses lightweight dumbbells. Holding the dumbbells in front of you while in your golf posture, rotate your arms away from each other as far as you can.

Body Sway

I’ve discussed this flaw in my golf tips a few times. If your hips are inflexible, your body can’t turn properly. Instead of rotating, your hips turn away from the target in the backswing and your body weight shifts outside your feet. You end up hitting thin or fat shots.

Kneeling Long Turns:

Line your feet behind each other and kneel while holding a club overhead. Turn your body as far as you can each way when in the kneeling position.

Flat Shoulder Pain:

If you have back problems and your shoulders are tight, then you will have a tendency to lose your posture during your swing and make a poor body turn. The club will be off plane. This flaw makes it difficult to produce solid contact.

Reach, roll, and lift:

From a crouching position with your head resting on your fist on one hand, slide your other arm along the ground as far as you can and then lift it as you roll your palm upward toward the sky. Hold this position for 15 seconds, and then switch arms.

Getting Stuck:

If you have issues with your lower body, especially your ankles, your pelvis will thrust forward on the downswing and then move forward into the space where the club was supposed to travel. The club gets stuck behind the body, leading to blocked and hooked shots.

Ankle Wipers:

Sit on a physio ball and lift your toes to the right and left, like a windshield wiper, keeping your heal on the ground and your knees still.

The exercises described above help you maintain strength and flexibility in your mobility joints. They address five key mobility areas that weaken as golfers age. The exercises-if done correctly and faithfully-improve your flexibility and strength in these areas and help you swing a club more powerfully and efficiently. That in turn helps you maintain your golf handicap.

Copyright (c) 2008 Jack Moorehouse

Hoards of fans who may belong to same clubs unite by wearing the soccer jerseys of their favorite teams. The passion and devotion of these fans for the game and their teams are so much they can be regarded as cults in effect. A vast number of these emotional audiences contribute a lot to the drama and spectacle of the soccer game.

International competitions are organized and run by the Federation Internationale de Football Association or FIFA. Its membership has tremendously grown with the global acceptance of the soccer game. It could be noted that there are more members here than there are in the United Nations. This is the mania that drives people to soccer shops to grab their own soccer jersey and march to the stadiums to stand for their country representatives.

Loyal fans don their soccer jerseys to show support and respect for their national team regardless of how they perform against their competition.

Soccer jerseys are priceless
A soccer jersey of a famous, key player sometimes gets auctioned off to the highest bidder. This type of merchandise almost always fetches a considerable amount of money since there are a lot of fans that collect soccer jerseys and they don’t care about the price tags. The bidders wouldn’t give in easily for want of getting the precious token and this raises the prices so high that the soccer clubs get significant revenues from them.
For these fans, the originals are priceless and they want them badly.

Some players donate their soccer jerseys for charity since they have an inkling of how much they could cost when auctioned off. The best thing about such items is that they are mostly personally autographed by the player.

For those who cannot afford the originals, there are replicas that are being sold at much lower prices. Fans should be warned though, about replicas being sold as originals, and therefore price-tagged much higher.

Every soccer team has its own uniform for identity and unity purposes. A high school team, club, college, or kids’ league also change their jerseys seasonally like the professionals. These smaller teams also get the same fan acceptance within their locales and their supporters can also be seen donning their uniforms.

Wearing soccer jerseys is a much more popular trend among the youngsters or college kids.

Well-known brands like Nike, Adidas, Diadora, or Eurosport have their own soccer jersey lines but most local soccer stores in any neighborhood also sell soccer jerseys.

Why wear soccer jerseys?
For a soccer team, it of course reflects their personality and identity. For the fans, to wear it is to support their teams. For the more patriotic lot, they wear soccer jerseys to root for their country in international games. Others wear them for their bright, radiant colors. These colors are easily identified amid the crowd, so from a distance, they can proclaim their admiration to their favorite players. Since there are a lot of soccer teams, some people collect their jerseys for fun too.

It should be increasingly apparent to student athletes that if you want to get an athletic scholarship you must network. Unless you are one of the top prospects in your sport it can be difficult to get the sports scholarship that you are looking for. One of the best forms of networking is signing up for camps. Soccer offers a number of camps that are geared toward gaining exposure and assisting in the recruiting process. One may find lists of camps online or contact your high school coach, club coach or local universities for information on camps.

One camp is offered by Chigozie Offor, a former Nigerian National team standout, the camp is called Top Seed Soccer and takes place in central Florida. The camp was a success in it’s first year as it had three college recruiters attend and caught six soccer scholarships.

Offor’s camp offers information on soccer fundamentals, college recruiting and soccer combine testing. With a number of college coaches in attendance they have hopes of doubling the number of soccer scholarships this year. It is important for athletes to realize that college soccer coaches don’t have the budget to travel and see every high school game. It really is much more about networking and marketing yourself at tournaments and camps. The college scouts believe that the most talented and dedicated athletes will be the ones that attend camps and play on club teams. That is why those are the athletes that will be rewarded with soccer scholarships.
